Spring 2013 Bookshelf

Can’t believe it’s already Q2 2013..time flies.
Got squeezed enough…time to soak up!

  1. The Power of Habit – Charles Duhigg
Started by introducing the famous H.M. case and the rat T-maze experiment. Shame that I didn’t take 9.00 intro to psycho at last because of of schedule conflict every semester.

  2. Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking Book – Susan Cain
A great title!! Nope I haven’t even flipped it yet (on iPad).

  3.  Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead – Sheryl Sandberg
Yes “sample” only, read through the intro and Chapter 1. I almost bought it right away when I saw its review everywhere, “book of the month” and, of course, it’s written by Sheryl Sandberg! With all due respect, I like it but not as attractive as I thought.
Too generalized but narrow in scope: The motivation of the book is that, because of social and internal barrier, women tend to “hold back”, “”stay back”, that we are “not aggressive enough to acquire power”. We all therefore should revolutionarily “lean in”. Don’t think all women in the world aim to “acquire power” in workplace to reach the C-Suite like her. And I disagree the stereotype made in the book that men=outspoken, powerful, ambitious while women generally represent the opposite. For this reason this book didn’t click on me.

Too polarized: The whole book first segmented the world into men and women, ok fine, then it’s simply a feminist manifesto. Everything is in “she”, “her”, “”herself”, not sure how a guy will feel when reading it. Anyway, appropriate, kind of expecting this haha.

擇日放假

I'll Never Lego
I’ll Never Lego

– Better keep a pencil and notepad right next to my bed. Sleep = ideas start to blossom, out of control.

– 人情 is like a bank account. Need consistent disposal as a buffer to unavoidable withdrawal.

– Feedback-phobia. >.<

– Constantly jumping around different areas of thoughts to keep myself calm. Is this effective? Or shall I conquer the dark concerns one by one? Or shall I simply label them as ‘none of my business’?

Pareto Principle

Convey’s time management matrix – determined by urgency (a burning ‘yes!’, react NOW) and importance (contributes to my goals).

Quadrant 1: urgent + important
What: Require immediate attention but will stress you out.
Example: Deadline-driven projects, problems or crisises.
To me: Revision for JLPT.

Quadrant 2: not urgent + important
What: A long-term development around your principle center and mission.
Example: Relationship building, search for new opportunities and interests in life, leisure, keep a balance in life.
To me: Re-evaluate my life goals, blog, go to gym, keep a healthy diet, read books and news, catch up with friends regularly, spend time with family…e.t.c.

Quadrant 3: urgent + unimportant
What: Usually short-term emotional status or distractions we have to deal with, keep them short.
Example: Feeling victimized, frustrated, discouraged or just simply a phone call.
To me: My emotional swings and random thoughts/impulses.

Quadrant 4: not urgent + unimportant
What: Where we tend to escape to or kill time.
Example: Worthless time wasters or pleasant activities.
To me: FB,  candy crush…>.<
