Dear Cheung-san,

First of all, welcome to MIT!  Glad to hear that you chose MIT. Life  at MIT will be
challenging but enormously exciting.

Yes, we give a placement test to all incoming students who wish to  enroll in upper level
Japanese classes.  Time and place of the test  has not been determined but it is usually
given at the beginning of  the semester, right before the course starts.  The test will
include  listening, reading, translation, and grammar.  A brief interview will  also be
administered.
Before you take the test, I would like to meet you in person and ask  a bit more about
your background in Japanese studies.  I could give  you advice on your Japanese studies
at MIT then.  Also we can talk  about possibilities of doing internship in Japan through
MISTI  program (probably in your sophomore or junior year).

I will be available in the last week of August.  Please email me when  you arrive at MIT
so that we can make an appointment.
I will be looking forward to meeting you in fall!  In the meantime,  you have any
questions, feel free to contact me.

Best,

Director, Japanese Program
MIT
